wrong about hefewiezen off flavors
I posted earlier about some excessive sour/banana smells and tastes in my first attempt at brewing... a German Hefewiezen. Well after some taste comparisons with samples from well established German breweries, I'd say mine parallels the flavors faily closely. I guess the taste is way different than my American flavor summation could accept. The samples I tried were Erdinger, Schneider Weisse, and Weilhenstephaner. The Erdinger was way different than mime. Having little fruitiness, and zero banana or clove aroma. The latter two tasted very much like my attempt, especially the Schieder Weisse. All of the storeboughts had very bad/little aroma. I believe perhaps from oxidation over time, stemming from the lack of refrigeration. I read several accouonts of the Erdinger stating that it was a very poor representation of German Hefeweizen, but nonetheless a palatable beer. Guess I'll chaulk one up for experience on this,(or inexperience), and realize just how different some beers can taste. One thing for sure, I can't wait to brew another batch of homebrew. Very interesting hobby!
