Re: walmart beer
Really??
Ok..... Lets see.... I can think of some things, but none that would make ace beer.
If Walmart has plain barley (not pearled) then you could make your own malt theoreticly. If not then you might be able to pull something off using sugar, pearled barley, flaked oats, flaked barley, herbs ( you need some bittering ingrediant, and Walmart doesn't sell hops ) vegetables and fruit could also be used for flavorings, as well as flour. Yeast is also a must. I know of no ready made recipe though.
IMHO if you want your beer to come from a Walmart then buy the already made kind. If you must homebrew and Walmart is your only resource then make prison wine.
This has me wondering if I could make a beer out of stuff picked up at a local mega mart..... Interesting challenge.

Re: walmart beer
unfortunately, to make beer you need Hops, Malt Extract (or malted grain), and brewer's yeast. Thus far I haven't found any of these things at walmart. I first found beer supplies at a flea market. You can also find a homebrew shop basically in any metro area, and of course, online. Local Micro-breweries also sell to homebrewers on occasion. You can make pretty good wine from Walmart juice, however...
My closest shop is over 200 miles away so I go there every 6 months or so and buy a lot of the common stuff, and then any little things I need along the way, I order online.
Sorry no better news.

Re: walmart beer
(My) Wal Mart short list:
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Seriously, though, try as I might, I can't think of ANY kind of actual BEER you could make with nothing but Wal Mart ingredients! You could do a reasonable Mead with honey and bakers yeast, but beer poses a problem. Wal Mart doesn't sell any malt sugar, and MY Wal Mart doesn't sell barley of any kind. You need the enzymes in barley to make sugar out of starch, so it'd be pretty much impossible to make, say, a really wheaty wheat beer out of wheat flour. If you had a jar of amylase enzyme, though:

I'm sure something could be made. Maybe some wheat flour, rice, and roasted pumpkin, mashed for 2 hours at 155 degrees with the amylase enzyme. Boil for 90 minutes with a little pumpkin pie spice for the last 5 minutes. Pitch some bakers yeast. Still, what would you do for bittering? There's no hops at wal mart. Also, you'd need a metric ton of rice hulls to prevent a stuck sparge. Some Irish Moss too.
I dunno. Next time I go to Wal Mart, I'm gonna take a better look around. It seems like an interesting concept, even if I DO think it'll end up tasting pretty sub par.
Cheers,
Dave

Re: walmart beer
Wow sounds like you guys are having a bad time of it, all large supermarkets in Australia stock brewing basics: Carbonation drops, Brewing sugars, and a basic range of budget hopped liquid malt extracts (that come with generic brewing yeasts.) You can actually make something basic and drinkable quite cheap, a 5 gal brew for less than $20AU (about $15 American.) You should write up a petition to Walmart or something. A 200 mile trip isnt very brew friendly!

Re: walmart beer
I have made beer from supermarket ingredients, it turned out ok, but not great. Check it out here: http://sites.google.com/site/cheapandeasybutgoodhomebrew/Home/message-board-2/supercheapandeasybeer2lpopbottlebrew
I was going to try this too, just haven't had a chance, its a white ale brew to make a 1 gallon test batch.

Could use this for yeast:
