Sulfur in Tap Water
Hello,
I'm about ready to start my first batch, but was concerned about the quality of my tap water. I will be using spring water in the wine itself, so that isn't the concern. I was wondering, however, if it was even safe to use my tap water for cleaning the equipment and bottles etc. I have a pretty bad sulfur problem. It has a very bad rotten egg smell. I'm working on finding a solution for this, but wondered what you guys thought.
Thanks,
Ryan

Re: Sulfur in Tap Water
I suspect cleaning your equipment with your tap water should be okay.
I doubt there would be enough residue (if any) on the equipment and bottles to be noticeable in the final product.

Re: Sulfur in Tap Water
You would think that in places like Alaska or Wyoming we would have the best water in the country. Unfortunately that isn't always true. Wyoming has high sodium in their water.
When I clean with soap and water in the sink like washing other eating materials I use my tap water. When I am sterilizing my wine containers, I use one step. I use bottled water. Expensive at 78 cents a gallon but I just feel more comfortable. I use bottle water for all of my mixing water for wine and beer.
My well water has a sand filter, a rechargable charchol filter, water softner, a ultra violet light bug filter, then an RO but I still feel uncomfortable using it for wine and beer. I am in farm country so I also worry about nitrites and nitrates. Sometimes I think the best drinking water in the country is in CA where every year they send out the statements what is contained in the water. I know they get wacko about stuff but water today is getting almost dangerous to drink.
I'm not sure about other states but Wyoming has all of those bubbling pots up in Yellowstone that has lots of sulphur also.
