Strange residue on bottom of bottle

Postby Niall27 » Fri Apr 03, 2009 7:17 pm

Hello, my beer will be done fermenting in 3 days but for the last 2 weeks there is a small amount of whiteish gooey stuff at the bottom of each bottle.

It is pretty much stuck to the bottom of the bottle but im worried, it might just be some residue or some residue or something but could it be dangerous and could i get sick from drinking the beer from those bottles now?

Or is it normal?

Hello there and welcome. Have you already bottled the beer and you are seeing the residue or do the empty bottles have residue before filling? If it is after you have bottled, you are fine. This is home brewing and you will always get a little leftover yeast in the bottom of the bottles. This is very normal. I usually poor mine in a glass very carefully and leave the last little bit in the bottle.

Oh thanks :)

Yeah it appeared a few days after i put the beer in the bottles to ferment.

This may sound silly but is it dangerous or anything? like if i accidently drank a bit i wont get sick will i?

It's not dangerous and if you drink it nothing bad will happen to you except you might possibly get a little bit of an upset stomach but probably not even that. I also try not to drink it just because I don't particularly like the taste but it's definitely not toxic or anything like that.

I have never had anything happen if I drink it. As a matter of fact, I was stationed in Germany for a couple of years while in the Army, and they serve their Weizen beers with the yeast. They pour the beer in a glass leaving about an inch in the bottle. Then they swirl the the bottle to mix up the sediment and pour it in on top. Trust me when I say yummy.
