Questions about my new burner setup

Postby Heavenlyfire » Sat Apr 25, 2009 9:25 pm

Ok guys, I have read in here where most are using higher BTU burners to boil. I have a 60,000 that almost gets there. I can get a very small roll going on 3 gallons with a water temp of 205 - 208. What can I do to get that extra 5 to 10 degrees that I need? I have closed off the top with aluminum foil (for now, something more permenant if this works). I have almost no heat loss so my question would be does the burner need to be closer to the pan maybe? Right now it sits about 6 - 8 inches below it. Here are some pics to show what I have done. Now everybody put your thinkin caps on.

Also you will notice that I used a BBQ grill valve for the burner. This works great to control the flame level.

I think the bbq valve is the culprit. They usually are a low pressure lower volume for bbq burners. I have a bbq with a burner on 1 side. It will not get 2 gallons boiling even after an hour.
You will need some air coming in the bottem of the burner somewhere also. So copmpletely closed off is not a good idea. On my burner with 13 or 14 gallons i do not have to have it cranked very high to boil. I make it so the flames almost come out to the side but not to where they come up the side.
Are you leaving the lid on until the boil starts? That will help a bunch also.

I do leave it covered but as soon as I take the lid off, it's gone. I think your right about the valve though. I need to figure that part out. The bottom is open around the edges with about an inch gap for air flow. I think I just need to work on the regulator and valve issue.

It appears he has an "air intake" going into the burner to suck in air. My Bayou has the same set up, but with an adjustable plate for air flow. Regardless, my burner is less "fancy" than his and I can boil ten gallons pretty efficiently. I think jeepguy is correct that it's the valve. I'm even at 6000 feet and can get it up to boil pretty quick (admittedly at about 5 degrees below what it would boil at at sea level).

Ya, im only about 15' above sea level so it has to go up to 212 before it starts.
