plum tree & wine making

Postby FranBrewer77 » Sun May 30, 2010 11:37 pm

I am studying on the beer side but have a loose end with wine: our property has a plum tree that puts out 3 or 4 gallons of white/ red fruit kind of molted in color, it is not super sweet, and has a big pit in it. The previous owner said he made up a few 5 gallon batches of plum wine. Is this worthwhile? Any recommendations of a good current wine making book. Thanks Fran

Takes about 4 or 5 pounds of fruit to make a gallon of wine. I usually make my wine in 5 gallon batches.

Check out Jack Keller's web site. There are a lot of recipes listed.

JUST yesterday a friend called and asked me about some "wild" plums. I'm not a plum expert so I don't know if there are wild varieties or if they came from an orchard by some means. I told him to keep an eye on um' when they start getting ripe (?when?)try one and see how it tastes. If anybody has tried using wild plums I would like to here about it.
