pear wine color

Postby norman » Sun Nov 08, 2009 4:30 am

Newbie here...making pear wine per reciepe found...somewhere on line. We are into the point where the mix is in the fermentor and continues to bubble through the air lock. However the color is dark sort of like cider. Why? We added "raisins" per receipe, but it did not specify white or regular. Could this cause the darke color or what? Thanks.

I'm sure the raisins darkened the wine. It will be fine. I like a little color in my wine. Without raisins pear wine seems a little tasteless to me. I don't think it really matters if the raisins were dark or golden. Sometimes I even add a little brown sugar with the white sugar for some color and slightly different flavors.

Since you are under an air lock in the primary and it is fermenting well wait till it stops bubbling, then rack the wine.

When using lighter flavored fruit like pears, apples, peaches etc. many people will just juice them and adding no water. If adding small amounts of fruit along with water the raisins add more flavor. If I am using the heavier flavored fruits like blackberries I use about 4 to 5 pounds per gallon which makes a good wine.
