Nugget Nectar Clone
So I'm sure like much of you, I've done a lot of searching trying to find a recipe for Troeg's Nugget Nectar with no luck. I decided to take what I've discovered and pieced together a recipe myself. I'm going to try to brew it this weekend, but thought I'd share beforehand to see if anyone has some suggestions.
Nugget Nectar clone (5.5 gallons):
Malts:
4lbs Pilsen dry malt extract
3.5lbs Pilsen dry malt extract (late addition)
2lbs Munich (10L) malt
2lbs Vienna malt
4oz Crystal 20L malt
20g Chocolate malt
Hops:
1.25oz Nugget hops [13%] (FWH)
0.6oz Nugget hops [13%] (30mins)
0.6oz Warrior hops [16%] (30mins)
0.6oz Tomahawk hops [16%] (30mins)
0.25oz Simcoe hops [13%] (30mins)
0.25oz Palisade hops [9%] (30mins)
1oz Whole Nugget hops (aroma/hopback)
1oz Whole Nugget hops (dry hop)
1oz Warrior hops (dry hop)
Yeast:
California Ale (WLP001)
by my calculations, this should give me around the 7.5% ABV and 93ish IBUs (Tinseth) that Nugget Nectar has. I couldn't find the SRM anywhere, but my guess is straw/orange is around 8 which is what I shot for. I think I have it pretty close, but any suggestions/advice are welcome.

Re: Nugget Nectar Clone
In case anyone was curious, I bottled this about a week ago and tried it for the first time today. Needs a little more time, but so far so good and pretty close to Nugget Nectar.

That looks intense! 93 IBU's ??!! wow. Judging from that site, your recipe looks pretty good. In any case, you won't be lacking on hop flavor! Let us know how it turns out..

Re: Nugget Nectar Clone
So I finally got around to trying this up against the real thing. Unfortunately, the real thing is a seasonal and I've had it in my basement since around Feb so its taken on a slight aged flavor and the hoppiness faded a bit. Its still great by any means, but made it a little harder to compare to.
Aroma: Pretty close to what it should be, an extra week of dry hopping probably would have done the trick
Appearance: Spot on
Flavor: Very hoppy and bitter, but still pleasant. Tough to compare with the 'aged' version, but pretty close to what I remember the original being.
Mouthfeel: Nice and crisp, pretty close to the real thing.
Overall: Close, but not all the way there. I'll have to save some for the next batch that comes out to get a closer comparison.

Re: Nugget Nectar Clone
I tried to make one of these as well, there are some recipes online you might have to look a bit harder. Anyways, I started there and modified it and came up with this. I'll tell you right now its not right but I'm going to mess around with it some more and try again. What I have created is drinkable, but is a bit thin. It was my first AG, so as you can anticipate I messed it up a bit and missed my gravities. Anyways, here's what I did:
Note it is for 3 gallons.
Nugget Nectar clone (3 gallons):
Malts:
5.00 lbs German Pilsner (2.0SRM)
1.75 lb Vienna Malt (3.5SRM)
1.00 lb Munich 20L
1.25 lb Munich 10L
Hops:
0.60 oz Nugget hops [12.2%] (60min)
0.30 oz Zeus hops [15.2%] (20mins)
0.60 oz Nugget hops [12.2%] (20mins)
0.30 oz Simcoe hops [12.7%] (20mins)
0.60 oz Palisade hops [7.2%] (0mins)
0.75 oz Zeus hops [15.2%] (0mins)
Yeast:
White Labs WLP001 / Wyeast 1056. (I used WLP001).
90 min boil, 60 min mash @ 152F. 72% efficiency. 10SRM.
I would have dry hopped, but since I missed my gravities so badly I decided it was already going to be too bitter. Indeed it is bitter, more than Nugget Nectar but this is my fault not the recipe's. What I have above calculates out to 1.077 OG, 88 IBU (whole leaf -- with pellets it is 95IBU). If you scale back up to 5 gallons the hop amounts become more normal-looking.
Also, the recipe DOES need some Crystal malt. As I found out later, Troegs does use some in their actual recipe. The Munich should come down in amount, and with Crystal one would not have a need for the 20L Munich and can use the 10L Munich instead. The Vienna seems fine, maybe going up a bit would be OK. The hop flavor is weird, the ratios don't seem correct. It may also have too much Palisade. I think a dry hop with Nugget would have fixed this, or atleast adding some to the flameout addition. Upon smelling the Nugget hops and the Nugget Nectar, the aroma in a lead role. Palisade should not be the leading aroma and thats what I ended up with. Also, the color seems about right. It may be a hair too dark, so I would try again for a high 8, almost 9 SRM level.
