Laramie Brew Fest 2009
This post is a week late, but I got in a nasty car accident on the way home (it was two days later I was completely sober FYI) and spent the last week loopy on pain-killers.
Anyway, the star of the show IMO was Grand Teton Brewery's "Weizen Bock". This was a BIG wheat beer (8% ABV) that is very strong on the Banana/Clove flavor that I adore in German Wheat beers. I spent quite awhile talking with the brew master and apparently it's fermented with a Lager yeast as an accompaniment to the Weihenstephan weizen yeast. The reason for this was that the weizen yeast doesn't attenuate as well as he wanted, but imparted the banana flavor that, in his words, he wanted "to scream at you". He had to do something special to keep the Lager yeast from taking over on the second batch, but by that time I had several samples, and don't recall the process
.
In any case, if you find a bottle of this, GO FOR IT! They're "Premium" beers usually go for about $11 a bottle for a little over 32oz in a "Grolsch" style flip-top bottle. Pricey, yes, but these are occasional beers. I have not seen it on shelves around here yet.
An honorable mention (this is all personal opinion), was the IPA from the local Micro, Altitude Chophouse and Brewery. It had awesome hop aroma (this seemed lacking in many of the IPA's I sampled that day) that led to awesome hop flavor, and the bitterness was not "painful", but appropriate.
So if you're in the area, think about swinging by Laramie, WY next year for the brewfest. An excellent event for a little College town.
