Keep it cool.

Keep it cool.

For those who are just starting to brew at home. Wet towels are the trick to keep your fermentors cool. You can also use a fan if need be, but with our house kept at 78 degrees f, the wet towels keep the fermentors well below 73 degrees.
Cheers.

No issues with mold or mildewing of the towels?

I live in S. Florida and do the same thing. I do get a bit of "fuzzyness" sometimes and just spray the outside of it with k-meta solution once in a while. Even at the end of secondary there should be at least a little bit of positive pressure in the carboy, so it's not a real concern (for me anyway...others may be cringing right now).

Been using this method the last two summers with no probs. Gotta agree with Noontime.
However, I just got a small room AC unit for free and installed it in the "brew room," so now
it's no problem keeping the fermenters below 73 deg.
Cheers.

Well its winter here, so I have the old brew-mat heater out, but I use the towel and fan method in summer. Sometimes I even fill a few 3lt milk bottles with water, freeze them, and then stick them under the towels next to the fermenter. Though that was during a spell of 45 degree celsius days (115 Fahrenhiet). With the fan and wet towel technique I have actually managed to crash cool a brew, bringing it from about 20C down to 14C (from about 65F down to 57F). Its a fairly good method.

I got a Cube cooler and cut a small hole in the lid. My 6 gallon carboy and 4 bottles of ice fit in there very nicely and I never have issues with temps. Oh by the way did I mention that I live in Arizona (also known as Hell). It was a cheap investment that works great.

SHOULD THIS EVEN BE DONE?LITTLE WORRIED IT MIGHT EXPLODE OR SOMETHING.

You could always go with the nearly technical approach, and build a son of fermentation chiller:
