Hops/Hopping/Dry Hopping!!!

Postby Sego » Thu Jun 11, 2009 11:09 am

Hi Folks,
Tuesday night I put together a brew that required hops!
Having never used hops, I threw it all in the mix as this is what I thought I was to do.
My mate thinks the brew is now stuffed as we should have boiled the hops first, then filtered the hops out and put it in the wart!
I asked one of the guys at work - a Canadian brewer [must be good] - and he says what we have done is called dry hopping [no! not humping], but didn't know what it would now do to our brew.
The brew mix is Caffery's Irish Ale, but we are apparently dry hopping it. What will it taste like and what are the different types of hopping?
Sincerely
Scott

Generally hops are to add bitterness to offset the maltiness. My guess is that you have been using pre-hopped malt until now. You do have to boil the hops to get the bitterness out of them (usually an hour). I imagine you'll have a fairly sweet, hoppy, beer with the particular variety of hops determining what kind of other character it might have. In any case, I'm sure it'll be drinkable!
