Grain question
I don't have the means of crushing my own grains so I have been buying all of my grain pre-crushed. How long will the grain stay good? I have used stuff that was over a month old and it seems to taste fine. I can't help but wonder if I'm selling myself short. Either my taste buds are not very sensitive or time hasn't taken its tole on my grain. Any thoughts?

Re: Grain question
How long your crushed grain will remain fresh will depend on how you store it. Heat and moisture will make your grain deteriorate faster. If you vacuum pack your crushed grain, and store it in the fridge or freezer, I'd imagine the grain would keep for several months or longer.

Re: Grain question
I always try to vacuum pack. Even then you can freeze and not have to worry about freezer burn. You should be able to get atleast 6 months out of it.

Re: Grain question
Thanks for the help. I guess I will breakout the vacum-packer. What I really need is for Jeepguy to make me a "buddy deal" on a mill haha...

Re: Grain question
It really is hard to beat having your own grain mill! It's nice to be able to order base malt 50 lbs at a time. Also, you get to grind it any way you like! This is kind of a big deal, seeing as how the grind influences both your efficiency and your ability to lauter. I own a barley crusher, and I love it!

Re: Grain question
I purchased the Barley Crusher MaltMill Model 50125A and it will pay for itself in less than 10 batches. If you buy grain in bulk, you may store it in closed containers for up to a year. I usually crush the grains while the water is heating for the mash, but I can't say that crushing my own grain makes the ale taste any better. It's just a fun thing and cheaper down the line.

My pleasure Jeepguy. I always try to make make my large purchases with you. I appreciate all your help with my brewing questions. Can't wait for you to drop off my 50# bag of 2 row on Sunday so I can try my new barley crusher. You will have to try some of the beer I just kegged up. Thanks again..
