Fermenters?

Postby GuitarLord5000 » Mon Feb 25, 2008 12:28 am

Hello everyone. I need some advice. Im getting ready to start making beer faster than 5 gallons at a time. The only fermenter I have right now is a 6.5 gallon carboy that I have from my mead making days. I LOVE the fact that I can see the progress of my beer in the carboy, but it makes other things quite difficult (ie - Getting the wort into and out of the carboy. Aerating the wort, etc.).
I am debating which I should add to my current setup. A couple of carboys, a couple of fermenting buckets, or a larger 10 or 12 gallon bucket fermenter. (How 'bout a conical? Shaaaaa, I wish!)
Im pretty much just curious about your opinions. As I've never used a bucket fermenter, I really dont know the pros and cons. Lemme know what you think.

Cheers!
Dave

I was gonna do a 10gallon and a 20gallon fermenter but, have been using 2 6.5gallon ferment buckets and it's been working great!! Plus it's a bitch carrying 10+gallons 100feet.haha Conicals from what I hear are not worth the money and are a BITCH to clean.
Thanks,

I use 2 -6 gallon carboys at the moment but they are a pain to clean. I also use one of the 16.5 gallon fermenters i have on my site. It is easy to clean & seals great. & it has metal handles.
Buckets work fine though. I have some 6.5 & even some 7.8 gallon buckets. I also have a 12 gallon plastic fermenter bucket. But the lid doesnt seal real tight. I dont like it.
It is nice to only deal with 1 container though.
I would go with something u can get your hands in there & scrub.
The glass is cool to watch but its heavy & hard to clean.
Dont scratch the plastic either. & i would not use a bucket with a spigot, I wouldnt use the spigot anyway. its ok to have one there but i dont like using them because its hard to sanitize them in a full bucket.
