Dry hopping with a nylon stocking

Postby beernut » Sat Sep 20, 2008 5:31 pm

I have been doing a lot of dry hopping lately. My last batch I put the hops in a nylon stocking that I boiled for 5 minutes. The beer came out much clearer and was easier to work with. I haven't tried the beer yet. I have not heard of a lot of people using this method. Is this something that is taboo? I know that most people just add the hops to the secondary and roll with it. Has anyone tried the nylon stocking thing? Thanks

I just throw my hops into the same big pot I disolve my extracts, sugars, crystal grains and whatevers in then strain it all into the primary through a fine mesh. But I bottled a beer about a week ago where I left it in the second fermenter with some oak chips in a stocking like bag thing. I'd probably do the same with whole hops but the only ones I've used recently have been the pellets which disolve into a watery mulch that a stocking probably wouldn't hold.

I tried the beer today and it came out great. For those of you dry hopping, I would suggest this method. I dry hopped with pellets and the beer bottled very clean. It tastes and smells very good.

I've used stockings for boil hops (pellets) in the past, with no problems. I suggest boiling them first. Also, they will contribute color to a very pale beer. (Dont use black!!)

There is something almost perverse about stockings contributing colour to a brew, I'm definitely going to stick to my specialty mesh bag for oaking now.

Those are fine! Just give em a good boil before using em. Think of the names you could give that beer!

I am not even gonna start in on that!! Funny though.
On a more on topic note. The nylon hop bags are way different than stockings.

yeah, I used a new light colored stocking (not one that i pulled off of my wifes foot) and boiled it for five minutes before putting hops in it. Seems to have worked pretty good. I have some hop bags but I think the mesh is a little big for pellets. October fest sound good Jeepguy, let me know where. Next time your in town we can set up my keg system. Take care

It is here in Crescent City at the catholic school. I should have all the parts by next weekend. I had everything but 1 faucet.
Let me know if you want to bring some beer to oktoberfest. Last year was really fun. They have tons of food there too. & all ages are welcome. They had alot of people in haloween costumes last year from little kids to way old.

Hey, i gotta brew next weekend so i can have some beer for oktoberfest!! Le me know if you want to come over. You can bring your co2 gear & we will set it all up. Then you would only need to drill a couple more holes on the fridge.

If you're dry hopping in a carboy, you can use one of these infusers.
Maybe only an ounce at a time though.

On Tap - Oak Aged Bourbon Porter, Barleywine, and Chipotle Smoked Porter

Primary - Mead

The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind.
