Contaminated Batch?
I just brewed an all grain batch of beer with some of my brewclub members. It was a ss minnow mild clone and we pitched it with White Lab 002 English Ale yeast. After day 2 of fermentation my house stinks so bad of rotten eggs I had to but the beer in my garage. I have brewed a lot of beer and have never had a bad batch. I have never had a smell like this from my fermenting beer. Any ideas? We were very careful and very clean with the brewing. I can't see where we could have contaminated anything. I just can't help but think the beer is ruined. I would appreciate any input you guy may have.

I'd say no worries. Some beers prdouce hydrogen sulfide while fermenting which causes a rotten egg smell. I've personaly never experienced it, but apparently it isn't uncommon. One thing I have heard is that the particular yeast you are using, and beers that produce this odor should be aloud to sit in the primary several days to a couple weeks after fermentation to scrub out the off flavors.

Re: Contaminated Batch?
What does it look like? And what temp was it fermenting at?
I agree with waiting for a couple weeks to see how it turns out. If it gets all nasty looking then you may have a problem.
Report back in a few days!!
I do not have a sense of smell so i have no idea how my beers have smelled. Although my wife always says my wine and beer all stink!!

Re: Contaminated Batch?
I fermented like I always do, 68 degrees on the nugget. The smell is foul to say the least. I put it back in my house but hope I didn't damage it worse by leaving in the garage overnight. I haven't used that yeast before and have too say, if that's what is causing the smell, I won't be using it again. I can only hope for the best. Worst case, I guess I could send it to jeepguy for a christmas gift.

I really doubt you'll have a problem. I have had this, turned out the packet of yeast that came with the can of extract was an Ale-lager blend (so that its temps would be more flexible) and the lager yeasts at a higher temp make smells. but the beer turned out really well (especially considering it was a cheap brew and ended up at less than 20 cents AU$ a bottle). Another brewer I know had the same smell thing with the T-58 belgium yeast, though I have used it before without any stench so I think it can depend on adjuncts. Neither occassion did the smell appear in the beer taste at all, though I did leave mine in the secondary for two or three weeks.

Re: Contaminated Batch?
I've had several different strains of yeast off-gas some noxious sulfur smells. The worst culprits for me have been T-58 and WLP023 Burton Ale. They were so bad, I had to move them to the back room so my wife wouldn't throw them out. I liken the smell to rotten eggs and foot odor. I wouldn't worry about it too much, as they don't usually leave behind any nasty flavors or esters in the finished beer.

Well it does not smell like rotten eggs anymore so I guess it is doing good. I will keg it on Sunday. We will have to see how it comes out.
