Bottle caps for wine????

Postby Lacomo » Sun Jun 20, 2010 8:53 pm

I am totatlly new to any kind of brewing. I have my first batch of beer brewing now. My question has to do with wine bottling. With blueberries ripe now and blackberries ripening soon, I'm thinking about maybe brewing a batch or two of wine. My question is can I use beer bottles and crown beer caps for bottling wine?

If that is all you had, but your local homebrew & wine shop will sell cases of wine bottles so cheap that theres no reason to.It might be fun to bottle up a sixer for a quick buzz!

I'm sure beer bottles would work. Commercial wineries now use screw caps instead of corks. I have found with the screw cap wine bottles I can sometimes get a metalic taste, especially if they are stored on their sides like corked bottles. If I bottled wine in beer type bottles I think I would store them upright instead of on their sides.

I suspect the main cost in bottling wine in bottles is not the bottles or the corks but the corking machine. A good corking machine can run over $100. Probably a good investment, but expensive.
