Beer Suggestions

Postby Bluesssman » Tue Aug 24, 2010 2:32 pm

I am hoping you can suggest some great small brewery beers for the tasting segment of our beer show. Any style, any location, beers you have really liked and would drink again.

Thanks!!

How small?
I'm a fan of the Deschutes Brewery and several of their offerings or at least what I can get down here in the desert.
Has the Reno/Tahoe beer scene gotten any better in the last decade?
On Tap -
Oak Aged Bourbon Porter
Barleywine
Traditional Mead
Pale Warrior Ale
Russian Imperial Stout
Chipotle Smoked Porter
Robust Porter
Squeeze My Grapefruits Summer Blonde
Scottish Session Beer
Kolsch
Irish Red Rye

Unfortunately, many very good beers are not widely distributed and are only
available in draft.

The Silver Gulch Brewing Company in Fox, Alaska makes some very good beer.

Their Coldfoot Pilsner and Pick Axe Porter are particularly good.

Midnight Sun Brewing Company in Anchorage also has some very good beers.

One of my favorite beers of their's is Sockeye Red IPA.

During the winter months there is also a "souped-up" version of Sockeye Red
which is CoHoHo Imperial IPA.

If you like hoppy beers then both Sock Red and CoHoHo fit the bill.

Midnight Sun also have a few Belgian-style beers (i.e. Monk's Mistress and Panty
Peeler Tripel) that are definitely worth checking out.

Not only do they have great names and labels but they are also excellent beers.

Of course, there is also Alaskan Brewing and Bottling Company's Smoked Porter. This is a very good beer but it has kind of been done to death. However, if you have yet to sample it then by means do so.

I hope you get a chance to sample at least one or two of the beers I listed above.

Yes, the beer scene has gotten better. There are now five microbreweries providing good beer. One of the breweries, Great Basin, works with home brewers in finding great new recipes.
